Nourishing Hearts and Souls—The Pantry Hawai’i

Every year, Aloha Green takes the initiative to highlight numerous nonprofits from across Hawai’i and even beyond. The primary goal is to foster meaningful discussions surrounding vital topics that hold the potential to enhance both individuals and our entire community. Welcome The Pantry Hawaii, a remarkable food distribution service operated by Feeding Hawaii Together, a Hawaii-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Founded by the compassionate duo Diana and Charlie Lorenz, The Pantry Hawaii has become a beacon of hope, providing sustenance and support to those in need – a true testament to the power of community-driven initiatives.

A Grocery-Style Experience

At the heart of The Pantry Hawaii’s approach lies a unique and innovative concept – a “grocery store style” setting, This visionary idea allows clients to choose the food they need, just like they would in a supermarket. The significance of this approach goes beyond just offering a wide selection; it fosters a sense of dignity and empowerment for those in need. With the freedom to choose, The Pantry Hawaii not only minimizes food waste but also uplifts individuals, granting them the agency to shape their journey toward self-sufficiency.

Who they Serve?

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the state of Hawaii witnessed a staggering 161,000 residents grappling with food insecurity. At the same time, an additional 200,000 found themselves newly unemployed, facing sudden and drastic changes in their circumstances. The Pantry fought to pick up and assist when the government was unable to do so. The demand for food assistance surged exponentially, with some regions experiencing up to an eightfold increase. This nationwide investigation shed light on the hunger crisis sweeping across the US, fueled by the mass unemployment resulting from the pandemic. Approximately one in three individuals seeking groceries have never before required emergency food aid. The magnitude of the situation was undeniable, and it called for immediate action.

The Pantry’s commitment lies in providing support to those in need today and preparing to assist those who may face food insecurity in the near future. As a compassionate organization, they are dedicated to helping individuals and communities survive this crisis and navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

Why The Pantry?

A centerstone for AGApoth is our ohana—our community and ensuring we are all cared for. As soon as we met them, we knew The Pantry would be a perfect fit for our next partnership. The Pantry embodies this spirit of community, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where volunteers and clients alike come together. Everyone involved in The Pantry Hawaii shares a common goal: ensuring that no one in the community goes hungry.

Situated in the heart of Kalihi, a community neighboring our Herb House, The Pantry shares close ties with us. Through our partnership, we have the opportunity to contribute to the welfare of our community directly. For the remainder of this year, we are honored to join hands with The Pantry, making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

As part of our dedication, we will match all donations made by the end of the year. To participate, look for our donation boxes at all four locations. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a difference in the lives of those facing hunger.

For those who wish to do more, The Pantry’s website offers information on volunteer opportunities. By lending a helping hand, you can play an active role in strengthening the community and spreading aloha.

Let’s come together, embrace the spirit of giving, and create a lasting impact for the betterment of our community. Join us in supporting The Pantry and making a difference in the lives of those who need it most!
